Looks like Rohit Sharma will probably stay captain for the England Test series coming up. This comes after India’s great win at the Champions Trophy 2025. Rohit led the team to win every game, beating New Zealand in the final.
After a bad Test series against Australia where he only scored 31 runs in 3 matches, some people wondered if Rohit should stay captain. But, according to the Indian Express, winning the Champions Trophy has helped Rohit keep his job, and the BCCI is now supporting him as captain.
A source told the Indian Express, “He has proven himself. Everyone thinks he should lead the Indian team for the England tour. Rohit also wants to keep playing red-ball cricket.”
Meanwhile, Ricky Ponting said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s experience was key to India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win, but their all-rounders also played a big part, according to the ICC’s website.
Ponting said in an ICC Review, Their all-rounders were great throughout the whole competition, as mentioned on the ICC’s website.
(Ravindra) Jadeja, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, they were all great. I said before the competition that India would be tough to beat because they have good balance and a mix of young and experienced players. Again, in the final, the captain stepped up and got the job done, Ponting said.
India played three all-rounders in their playing XI in all five Champions Trophy games. This gave them a strong batting lineup and lots of choices for bowling.
Ponting explained, They had a really balanced side because they had so many all-rounders… Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel (who they moved up the order sometimes for a left-handed option), and Jadeja, they made the team very balanced.
He added, The only thing you could say is that they didn’t have many fast bowlers, but it didn’t matter in the end.
That’s why Hardik Pandya’s role is so important. He can bowl with the new ball and get through some overs early, which makes it easier for the spinners in the Powerplay and middle overs, where they bowl most of the time, he noted.
