The first test match between Bangladesh and India in Chennai got off to a wonderful beginning, but they faced some difficulties at the end of playing on day one. The visitors had reduced Rohit Sharma’s men to 34 for 3 and then 144 for 6, but the two players helped their team from getting stranded again. By Thursday, when India finished their innings with 339 for 6, Ashwin was still not out at 102 runs while Jadeja had scored 86 not out.
Despite losing grip on the game, however there must be something deeper that is troubling them since they still needed ten overs to complete their target of bowling while they were given thirty minutes extension for this purpose. It may attract punishment from ICC against its former member.
Bangladesh’s woes are compounded by having been docked three points in the World Test Championship last month after their first test against Pakistan where they lost by an innings (148 runs) and amounted to a 15% fine on match fees too because of inadequate over rate.
When it comes to their match going on against India, Bangladesh was only able to bowl a total of 80 overs in all throughout the day. On Day 1, they bowled 23 overs in the first session, 25 in the second and 32 in the last one.
“Bangladesh will have bowled less than 80 overs despite the extra half hour,” cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeted on X. “This is totally unacceptable.”
According to article 16.11.2 in ICC World Test Championship playing conditions- “A team will lose (1) World Test Championship competition point for every penalty over it incurs during the Round Stage.”
