The ODI captain of Bangladesh Tamim Iqbal surprised everyone and announced his retirement three months before the 2023 ODI World Cup. This came in between the ODI series against Afghanistan where Bangladesh lost the first match. Now the BCB has named Litton Das as the captain of the Bangladesh cricket team for the remaining ODIs.
In the first match against Afghanistan, Bangladesh suffered a 17-run loss in a rain-affected match. After the match, Iqbal had a press conference and there only he announced his retirement by giving an emotional speech.
Tamim’s retirement announcement coincided with a period of criticism directed at him by Nazmul Hassan, the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Hassan openly questioned Tamim’s professionalism, as the former opener played the match without being physically fit for it.
Litton Das who is also the Test skipper of the side won the one-off Test match against Afghanistan by a huge margin of 546 runs in June. Now he has been provided with the responsibility to lead the team in the remaining two ODIs.
Litton Das said that it would be difficult to say that the team will miss Tamim Iqbal as the newcomers will take their place.
“It is difficult to say whether we will miss him. If I am injured today, the team will not miss me,” Liton told reporters.
“Going forward, newcomers will keep coming. Someday we will also go,” he added. “Since he is not there, we should not talk much about that topic.”
