Pakistan’s dynamic duo, Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq, etched their names into cricket history during the second match against Afghanistan, achieving a remarkable milestone in one-day internationals (ODIs). Their exceptional partnership propelled them past the record previously held by veteran batters Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan.
In a riveting encounter at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota, Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq demonstrated their prowess by forging a remarkable 108-run partnership. This significant collaboration was pivotal in Pakistan’s exhilarating one-wicket triumph over Afghanistan, successfully chasing a challenging target of 301 runs with just one ball to spare.
The remarkable achievement wasn’t the first for Babar and Imam. This dynamic duo has now amassed an impressive 100-run partnership in ODIs on ten occasions. This accomplishment surpassed the previous record held by Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, who had crafted 100-run partnerships nine times during their illustrious careers. Mohammad Yousuf established eight 100-run partnerships alongside Inzamam ul Haq in 50-over cricket.
The partnership between Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq extended to a significant 100-run stand for the second wicket, providing much-needed stability to Pakistan’s innings. Babar’s valiant effort added 53 runs off 66 balls before he was eventually dismissed. However, after Babar’s departure, Pakistan fell briefly, slipping from 170-2 to 211-6.
In the backdrop of this partnership, Afghanistan had set a formidable target of 300 runs after choosing to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s impressive knock of 151 runs, adorned with 14 fours and three sixes, set the tone for their innings. Yet, Pakistan’s bowlers staged a comeback, curbing Afghanistan’s scoring momentum and consistently taking crucial wickets.
In their pursuit of the target, Pakistan’s innings commenced with losing their first wicket at 52 runs. However, Shadad Khan’s crucial contribution of 48 runs off 35 balls, batting lower down the order, significantly steering Pakistan towards their goal. Ultimately, Naseem Shah’s final runs guided the team to a triumphant series victory.
Reflecting on the historic partnership and the match’s outcome, Babar Azam shared his insights. He emphasized the team’s focus on building partnerships throughout the innings and striving to accelerate in the final stages. Babar’s optimistic outlook looked ahead to the final ODI of the three-match series, aiming to maintain the winning momentum.
“All credit to boys. When starting with the bat, we just try to get partnerships. Just wanted to see after 40 overs where we stand. Had the quality of batting later on. In crunch situations, Naseem has performed well. Always have to improve in cricket. You’re never satisfied. Have to play the natural game. Looking forward to the last match. Looking to carry the momentum,” Babar said.
