Axar Patel backs Gautam Gambhir and company amid team India’s failure in Australia

Recently appointed as the vice-captain for T20I cricket, India’s all-rounder Axar Patel. T20I cricket has had a good run in the country, unlike the Test cricket, which has gone through tumultuous times, culminating in a 1-3 home defeat to India in the Border-Gavaskar series. Speculations are rife regarding the support staff of Gautam Gambhir, with reports suggesting that assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate were going under the BCCI’s scrutiny. But Axar has reiterated his confidence in the team management and made it clear he wasn’t aware of the Australian tour’s happenings. Axar also went on to add how vice-captaining also means making tough decisions every now and then.

In a media interaction ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against England, Axar backed the support staff.

“My last three months have been with the side. So I have no idea what happened there on the tour of Australia. But we have the same support staff here, and we discussed what to do in certain match situations,” said Axar.

Team India set to take on England from January 22 in a five match T 20 series followed by a 3 match ODI series.

“There are certain inputs we request. Discussions happen with the batting or bowling coach accordingly. In a fast-paced game like T20Is, we discuss important decisions and roles quickly,” said Axar.

Axar Patel also shared what leadership entails, and revealed his talks with head coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav

“Being a vice-captain certainly adds to your responsibilities. In such roles, one sometimes has to make harsh decisions and share candid opinions, and that has been a subject of discussion between me, Suryakumar Yadav, and Gautam Gambhir.”
