Ashwani Kumar, the debutant player for the Mumbai Indians, made quite a splash in the IPL, and he shared some encouraging words he got from his captain, Hardik Pandya. What really stood out was Ashwani’s achievement; he became the first Indian bowler to take four wickets in his first-ever IPL match, which is pretty impressive. It was exciting to see the Mumbai Indians sticking to their goal of finding fresh talent, and they introduced this 23-year-old left-arm seamer to everyone.
Ashwani, who’s from Punjab, had a special message from Hardik before stepping onto the field. Hardik simply told him to bowl without fear and to enjoy the game. Ashwani remembered those words fondly: “It really feels amazing. I didn’t think things would turn out like this. Hardik bhai reminded me that people from Punjab are tough and not scared of challenges. He told me to make the opposition nervous and have fun with it,” he said in a video shared by the IPL.
When it was time for Ashwani to bowl, he really made an impact. He came charging in, and you could see how focused he was, ready to take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Not only did he shine individually with outstanding figures of 4 wickets for just 24 runs, but he also struck fear into KKR’s batsmen.
Ashwani mentioned that out of all the big names he took down that day, his favorite wicket was Andre Russell. “He’s a big player, and getting him out was something special,” he remarked when asked which wicket meant the most to him. Right from his very first ball in the IPL, Ashwani was on fire. He bowled confidently, and Ajinkya Rahane tried hitting a boundary but ended up giving a catch to Tilak Varma instead. Varma had a bit of a fumble at first, struggling to catch the ball, but he managed to keep his cool and completed the catch on the second try.
Commenting on that moment, Ashwani said, “When the ball slipped out, I was just hoping he’d hold onto it somehow. I mainly rely on my bouncers, but I can also bowl yorkers.” His skillful bowling not only helped him shine personally but also kept KKR to a mere total of 116 runs. The Mumbai Indians chased down that score easily, marking their first win of the season with an eight-wicket victory. It certainly was a debut to remember for Ashwani Kumar!
