The omission of talented batsman Sarfaraz Khan from the Indian Test squad for the upcoming West Indies series has raised eyebrows and sparked a question from former cricketer Harbhajan Singh. Despite Sarfaraz’s outstanding domestic performances, the selectors introduced new faces while leaving out the prolific middle-order batsman.
Harbhajan Singh has expressed his support for Sarfaraz and called for proactive efforts from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and team management to engage with the promising talent.
Following the disappointing loss in the World Test Championship final against Australia, the Indian cricket team, under the guidance of coach Rahul Dravid, has made significant changes to the squad. While experienced bowler Mohammed Shami has been rested, veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped. Amid these alterations, Sarfaraz Khan, known for his consistent run-scoring abilities, was overlooked despite his remarkable form in domestic cricket.
Harbhajan Singh, an Indian cricket legend with a distinguished Test career, has advocated for Sarfaraz Khan’s inclusion. In an interview with PTI, Harbhajan questioned whether anyone from the BCCI or state associations had tried to approach Sarfaraz. He emphasized that Sarfaraz’s outstanding performances in domestic cricket should not be disregarded and urged the team management to engage with him.
Speaking PTI, Harbhajan stated, “Sarfaraz must get his opportunity as he has scored heavily in domestic cricket. I want to know if anyone has made an effort to go and talk to him, maybe from BCCI or state associations?”
Harbhajan Singh emphasized the need for effective communication and motivation in Sarfaraz’s case. Given his consistent performances, Harbhajan believes that efforts should be made to engage with Sarfaraz and help him reach his full potential. Encouraging the team management to keep Sarfaraz involved and motivated, Harbhajan highlighted the significance of making him feel valued and confident in his abilities.
“He is scoring runs, so you need to go and talk to him. Try to make him the player you want him to be. You have to keep him around the group and keep him motivated that he will get a chance to represent India.” Harbhajan further stated.
Sarfaraz Khan exhibited exceptional form during the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy season, averaging a remarkable 122.75 and amassing 982 runs. The Mumbai-based batsman has consistently proven his capabilities with over 3,000 runs and 13 centuries in his first-class career. His prolific run-scoring abilities have earned him a reputation as a highly talented and promising cricketer.
