“Another captain who did something similar…”: Former Indian Coach Compares Rohit Sharma With This Legendary Indian Skipper

Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar has lauded Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup, drawing parallels between his leadership style and that of the legendary captain Sourav Ganguly. Bangar highlighted Rohit Sharma’s unique selling point (USP) as the captain’s unwavering support for players returning from injuries and low confidence levels.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has earned praise for his exceptional leadership in the current World Cup. Despite concerns about recent ICC tournament failures affecting the team’s morale, Rohit Sharma has steered the squad with remarkable success. Under his captaincy, India has emerged as the only unbeaten team in the competition, securing a place in the semifinals with eight wins from eight matches.

Sanjay Bangar pointed out Rohit Sharma’s distinctive approach in supporting players returning from injuries and low confidence levels. Players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah, who had experienced extended periods of absence due to injuries, were included in the World Cup squad. Despite concerns about their match readiness, Rohit Sharma’s backing and confidence in their abilities have proven crucial.

“I believe his USP is that he’s backed the players who were injured and low on confidence. Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah these 3 players were making comebacks after injury, and they were given the confidence that they were a part of this team, that the team believed in their abilities, and that they would get opportunities,” Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports.

Drawing a parallel with former captain Sourav Ganguly, Sanjay Bangar highlighted how both leaders identified and backed players coming back from challenging circumstances. Bangar recalled Ganguly’s support for players like Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, and Ashish Nehra, who contributed significantly to India’s success during his captaincy. He commended Rohit Sharma for continuing this tradition by backing players on their return from injuries.

“When any captain says this, it’s above everything for a player. Another captain who did something similar is Saurav Ganguly when he identified Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, and Ashish Nehra. So, this is one fantastic contribution by Rohit Sharma as a captain,” he added.

Sanjay Bangar shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy during a discussion on Star Sports, emphasizing the importance of a captain’s belief in players and the positive impact it has on their performance. Bangar acknowledged Rohit Sharma’s contribution in fostering a supportive team environment.

As Team India looks to maintain its winning streak, they are set to face the Netherlands in their final league game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on November 12. The match provides an opportunity for India to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum heading into the crucial knockout stages of the World Cup.
