Jamaican cricketer Andre Russell had a standout performance on Sunday, answering his critics with a match-winning 57 off 25 balls. His teammate Varun Chakravarthy shared that Russell is eager to keep playing in the IPL for easily six more years. At 37, Russell has faced some scrutiny for his inconsistent form this season, especially after being retained for Rs 12 crore despite only scoring 72 runs in seven innings, averaging 10.28.
On Sunday, he turned things around and helped KKR score 206/4 in a crucial match against the Rajasthan Royals, which they won by just one run to stay in the playoff race. Chakravarthy mentioned that Russell is looking to play a couple more cycles of IPL, which could mean he stays with KKR into his 40s, as long as he maintains his form.
He looks fit. Age doesn’t matter if you’re contributing to the team, Chakravarthy said. Russell initially struggled against spinners, getting just 2 from his first 9 balls, but made a smart choice not to go for big shots early on. Chakravarthy defended him, stating that Russell can definitely hit spin and just opted for a different strategy this time.
Chakravarthy also played a key role in the match, taking two wickets in one over to slow down Rajasthan’s momentum. He shared that he’s been working on a new seam-up delivery to add some variety to his bowling, especially during the Powerplay. With five wins out of 11 games, KKR needs to win their last three matches to have a shot at the playoffs.
