Aminul Islam, the former captain of the national cricket team, has been named the new President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). He takes over from Faruque Ahmed, who was removed following a no-confidence vote and some controversies during his brief time in charge.
Aminul is stepping into this role while the board is facing some tough issues. He was working as the ICC development manager in Melbourne but has taken leave to take on the BCB presidency. He will hold this position until the next board elections, which are expected to take place by October.
Faruque’s ousting happened after eight board directors filed a no-confidence motion against him. This came after a committee looked into claims of corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), prompting action from the sports ministry. One of the directors who signed off on the motion was Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, who also represented the ministry on the board.
This unrest has come just nine months after Faruque took office on August 21, 2024. His term was troubled, especially with how he dealt with the firing of head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and issues surrounding the upcoming 2025 BPL season.
Reports say that on his first day, Faruque questioned Hathurusinghe’s role and then let him go within two months. He allegedly didn’t consult with the board before making this decision, which caused tension, particularly with Fahim.
Things went downhill when the Durbar Rajshahi franchise didn’t pay its players or even settle hotel bills, leading to protests from the players and prompting government intervention. This situation reportedly put the interim government in a tough spot and caught the attention of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who is currently leading the interim government and is interested in the BPL.
In total, Faruque served as president for just nine months and eight days.
