The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly acted against the backlash which came upon chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the whitewash of India at home by South Africa. Since India has lost two home Test series in 13 months, questions will be directed at Gambhir and Agarkar regarding the performances of the Indian team in Tests recently.
With the combination of Gambhir and Agarkar, India has gone through two home Test whitewashes. First, they lost to New Zealand in 2024, and now to South Africa.
Gambhir has taken the lion’s share of criticism, while Agarkar’s choices are also receiving scrutiny, especially since over 30 players have been included in the Test squad in two years.
BCCI Schedule to Interrogate Ajit Agarkar After Test Fiasco
Ajit Agarkar is increasingly being criticized for not being present at domestic matches, although he is seen at international ones. His scarce attendance at Ranji Trophy games has caused a greater disconnection between selectors and domestic players.
Batsmen like Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who have not had great first-class records, were given the nod over very consistently performing ones like Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair, and Abhimanyu Easwaran.
A BCCI official mentioned that the board would also interrogate the selectors on India’s Test defeats, and he added that they trust digital score updates even when they are not physically present at the matches.
A BCCI official talking to The Times of India said, “We will talk to the selectors also (regarding the Test debacle), and in the case of observing local matches, every score is on the app.”
Ajit Agarkar’s Participation in Foreign Tours
Ajit Agarkar previously mentioned how he was behind youngsters like Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel and Rajat Patidar during the England series in early 2024. But at the same time, he must take responsibility for excluding Sarfaraz and Abhimanyu Easwaran from the Test team.
Agarkar has accompanied the Indian squad on overseas tours. He was there for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and later for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.
Nevertheless, he has not seen a lot of domestic Ranji Trophy games. His last major visit to a Ranji match was in 2024 when Tamil Nadu faced Karnataka in Chennai. Devdutt Padikkal was called up to the Test squad after this match.
The 0-2 Home Defeat to South Africa by India Reveals Problems in Test Cricket
India was defeated in the 0-2 Test series against South Africa at home, one of which was their largest-ever defeat at home. The defeat revealed a lot of issues the team had been neglecting for a long time. The most significant, the losing streak of five out of the last seven home Tests, is a critical problem that cannot be neglected.
The team that came to visit played clever cricket, their spinners especially, who adapted to the home conditions differently.
By contrast, the Indian bowlers stuck to their one way of bowling and the batsmen had no strategy or patience which resulted in their poor shot selection even on the not too hard pitches.
India really should not be putting forward any reasons for their performance and should rather concentrate on solving the fundamental issues. This defeat by such a big margin must have been a loud alarm for the entire team to think about and implement through not only great but also very practical changes.
