In the Group B match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Barbados in the West Indies on June 3, Monday, David Weise of Namibia talked about the anxious sensation he had after saving the team in their Super Over triumph over Oman. In the game that went into the Super Over, Namibia pulled off an exciting victory—the first in a men’s T20 World Cup since 2012. Because of his versatility with the bat and ball, Weise was named the Player of the Match.
Weise opened out to the announcers following the game, describing the match as emotionally taxing and discussing his strategy in the super-over.
“Aged a few years older. I don’t have many years left in me, haha. A very emotionally taxing evening. It was helpful for me to have a feel for the game and to know that if I had a few hits in the Super Over, I should take the ball and execute while bowling and hitting,” Weise remarked.
Weise went out to bat in the super over after Namibia and Oman were able to tie the score at one. He hit Bilal Khan for two fours and a six in the first two deliveries. Namibia won with the biggest super-over score in the T20 World Cup thanks to the combined efforts of Weise and Gerhard Erasmus, who scored 21 runs. The team performed admirably in the Super Over after failing to chase down 110. When Weise was put in charge of defending the super over total, he conceded just 10 runs and claimed one wicket.
Weise also considered the pitch’s performance during Namibia’s 110-run chase against Oman.
“The pitch was challenging; it didn’t go as we had anticipated. But we did a good job adapting. It was a fast-paced, challenging wicket to get into. Undoubtedly, it’s one you should give some time to fully develop. (Aim) A difficult aim to judge because you’re playing differently if you’re chasing 180. However, allowing them to bowl as they did allows them to re-enter the game. I learned a lot from this game,” Weise continued.
