AB de Villiers Backs Virat Kohli To Bat At No.4, Check Out the Interesting Reason Here

The cricketing world has been abuzz with discussions ever since former India head coach Ravi Shastri floated the idea of Virat Kohli batting at No.4 instead of his usual No.3 position in the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. While this proposition has sparked debate among former India cricketers, AB de Villiers, the legendary South African cricketer and Kohli’s former teammate at Royal Challengers Bangalore, has emerged as a strong supporter of the idea.

AB de Villiers expressed his backing for Virat Kohli shifting to the No.4 position in ODIs. In his YouTube channel ‘AB de Villiers 360′, he shared, “We’re still talking about who will be the No. 4 batter for India. I’ve heard rumors about Virat (Kohli) possibly taking up that position. I would be a big supporter of that.” De Villiers’ endorsement comes from his deep understanding of Kohli’s playing style and capabilities.

While Kohli’s preference has been batting at No.3, de Villiers acknowledged that adapting to a new role might be necessary for the team’s benefit. De Villiers stated, “I think Virat is perfect for No. 4. He can put the innings together, play any kind of role in that middle order. We know he loves his No. 3 position; he’s scored all his runs there, but at the end of the day, if the team needs you to do something or play a certain role, you must put your hand up and go for it.”

Virat Kohli’s record at No.4 speaks volumes about his capabilities in that position. Although he last batted at No.4 three years ago against Australia in Mumbai, he has a stellar record at this spot. Notably, he has seven ODI centuries out of his total 46 at No.4, making it the only position apart from No.3 where he has achieved such a feat. His average of 55.21 at No.4 is slightly lower than his average of 57 at No.3.

If Kohli takes up de Villiers’ and Shastri’s suggestion and bats at No.4, it could lead to a reshuffle in India’s batting lineup. This shift might result in KL Rahul being dropped to accommodate the change and Ishan Kishan taking on the roles of wicketkeeper and opener. Shubman Gill could potentially fill in at No.3. The No.5 spot might become a contest between Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. However, the final lineup decision will hinge on the fitness of KL Rahul and the team’s strategic considerations.

The proposition of Virat Kohli batting at No.4 in ODIs has ignited discussions and garnered support from AB de Villiers. While Kohli’s dominance at No.3 is well-established, his potential move to No.4 could bring a fresh dynamic in India’s batting lineup.
