UP Warriorz Ready to Challenge RCB and Mumbai! Auction Analysis and Playing XI

UP Warriorz auction analysis

UP Warriorz are ready to challenge Mumbai Indians and RCB. That may sound surprising after their disappointing WPL campaigns, but their auction has given that claim real substance. The team taking shape has the balance to trouble the competition’s biggest names.

The most encouraging part is how the responsibilities are spread. This combination offers a role for every player, rather than leaving one or two stars to carry the side. If the players find form together, UP could become a serious threat.

To understand why, we first need to examine the gaps they had before the auction.

UP Warriorz Auction Analysis: What Did They Need?

UP already had three established overseas choices in Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield and Sophie Ecclestone. They needed a fourth overseas match-winner, along with strong cover if one of their main players became unavailable.

They also needed a wicketkeeper who could keep reliably and contribute with the bat.

The pace attack required a different skill set. Kranti Goud and Shikha Pandey can move the new ball, while Pandey also offers yorkers. Another bowler with effective cutters and changes of pace would give the captain more ways to respond when conventional swing was less useful.

The final requirement was power hitting in the lower middle order. UP needed players who could lift the scoring rate and finish an innings.

Which Key Players Did UP Warriorz Buy?

The additions most relevant to their playing XI were Sophie Molineux, Grace Harris, Kathryn Bryce, Sneh Rana, Sushma Verma and Asha Sobhana.

UP also signed Manali Dakshini and Sahana Pawar to add further squad depth. The main selection decisions, however, are likely to centre on how the more experienced recruits fit around the retained players.

Molineux and Harris Provide Match-Winning Overseas Options

Molineux gives UP a strong all-round option. Her left-arm spin strengthens the attack, while her batting allows her to contribute in the middle and lower middle order.

Harris brings a different strength: the ability to change a match through powerful batting. Her previous performances for UP showed how dangerous she can be when a chase needs rescuing or the scoring rate has to rise quickly.

Together, they address the need for overseas match-winners and create competition for places. UP now have alternatives capable of influencing matches, rather than simply filling a vacant overseas position.

Bryce Adds the Pace Variations They Needed

Bryce’s cutters and inswing offer a useful complement to Pandey and Goud. She also contributes with the bat, improving the depth of the proposed XI.

Her Associate-nation status is especially valuable. As a Scotland player, she can feature as the fifth overseas player alongside four players from Full Member nations.

That makes her a natural fit for this combination. It allows UP to use her all-round skills without removing one of their four main overseas choices, although selection will still depend on fitness, availability and conditions.

Verma, Rana and Sobhana Add Different Strengths

Verma addresses the wicketkeeping requirement. Her main value in the proposed XI is her work behind the stumps, while the size of her batting contribution remains less certain.

Rana offers experienced off-spin and another lower-order batting option. Over the last two seasons, she has shown her six-hitting potential lower down the order. That gives UP another source of attacking runs, although expecting her to provide explosive finishes consistently would place a demanding responsibility on her.

Sobhana adds leg-spin and another genuine selection option. Her presence gives UP further depth in a department that already looks particularly strong.

This combination gives UP a strong opening pair, technically capable batters through the middle and several bowling options. Verma’s batting role is the least certain, but her wicketkeeping serves a clear purpose.

Bryce strengthens both batting and pace bowling, while Rana provides another spin option alongside Deepti, Molineux and Ecclestone.

A Spin Attack That Can Challenge Anyone

On paper, UP have a strong case for possessing the best spin resources in this WPL.

Deepti and Ecclestone are established match-winners. Molineux adds another high-quality left-arm option, while Rana and Sobhana offer further variety and cover.

That depth gives the management several combinations to consider. They can choose according to the surface and opposition without leaving the captain short of spin options.

The pace department also looks well balanced. Pandey and Goud can threaten with the new ball, while Bryce adds cutters, inswing and a different way to approach her overs.

The Remaining Concern: Lower Middle-Order Power

The top order looks strong, and Harleen, Deepti and Molineux provide players capable of building an innings through the middle.

The less convincing area is the supply of consistent power hitting later in the innings.

Molineux and Rana can play attacking shots, but neither should automatically be expected to deliver the same finishing impact as a specialist power hitter. In the proposed XI, Harris is the player whose absence is most noticeable when judging that requirement.

UP therefore have most departments covered, but the lower middle order could still struggle when a match demands a sudden burst of boundaries.

Could Harris Replace Ecclestone?

Leaving out a bowler of Ecclestone’s quality would be a major decision. It is nevertheless a combination UP can consider.

With Deepti, Molineux, Rana and Sobhana available, their spin resources are deep enough to explore a more batting-heavy XI. Harris could play alongside Lanning, Litchfield and Molineux, with Bryce retaining the Associate-player place.

That would strengthen the lower middle-order hitting and give UP a batter capable of winning games through boundary scoring.

The trade-off is significant: they would lose Ecclestone’s control and wicket-taking threat. This should be a conditions-based option, rather than an automatic change. But if Harris delivers the firepower she is known for, it could make UP even more dangerous.

Why UP Can Trouble RCB and Mumbai

The strongest feature of this team is that the players have identifiable jobs. The openers can set up the innings, the middle order can build it, the wicketkeeper contributes behind the stumps, and the bowling attack offers several different skills.

That spread of responsibility matters. RCB’s championship success showed the value of contributions from across the team. UP’s proposed combination offers a similar opportunity to win through collective performance.

They still need those contributions to arrive consistently. But with their spin strength, varied pace attack and improved overseas choices, UP have the potential to surprise stronger-fancied opponents and challenge both RCB and Mumbai.

Final Auction Verdict

UP have addressed most of their important requirements. They have stronger overseas choices, wicketkeeping experience, pace variations and outstanding spin depth.

The remaining reservation is the reliability of their lower middle-order power hitting in the proposed XI. That costs them 1.5 points, although selecting Harris could help address it.

Final auction rating: 8.5/10.
