The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 tournament started for India when they won against the USA by 29 runs in Mumbai through Captain Suryakumar Yadav’s 84 runs without dismissal. India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir spoke on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues’ to describe Suryakumar as a captain while explaining that the team atmosphere had created a key factor for India’s T20 successes.
Gambhir, speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues’, heaped praise on Suryakumar Yadav for leading the T20I side from the front both on and off the field:
“Surya has made my life a lot easier in this format, and I think he’s a phenomenal leader of men-not because of the kind of batter he is or the shots he plays. All of that you can keep aside, but because of what he does on the cricket field. The way he interacts with players, the way he communicates with them, the duration he spends with them, and his composed behavior during games. As a coach, that allows you to think about other things because you know he’s going to keep the atmosphere calm, which is what any coach can dream of.
For me, Surya the player can be kept aside, but Surya the leader has ticked every box. He shows exceptional leadership abilities. It’s a great thing to have someone like him leading the country, because his heart is in the right place and he takes the right decisions, especially under pressure.”
The importance of maintaining a light team atmosphere which exists outside of game time shows its value according to Gambhir.
The young boys show their best qualities through their desire to play together while having fun. The dressing room atmosphere exists at a state which helps players prepare for their serious work on the field.
The dressing room needs to maintain its serious atmosphere throughout all times. You need to keep your focus active yet your body requires time to rest. The dressing room requires you to maintain a calm state during your time there. The atmosphere here has produced positive outcomes for our team.
The boys need to improve their teamwork skills yet they enjoy representing each other while sharing their dressing room space. The results we achieved exist because of this particular factor. Cricket results depend on multiple aspects which extend beyond the specific playing style of your team. The boys in this format achieve success because they truly enjoy spending time with one another.
