The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back, and with it come some new rules for this 18th season. As the 10 teams gear up for their competition for the IPL trophy, there are a few changes that players and fans need to keep in mind. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already rolled out some adjustments just days before the season kicks off, with more changes rumored, especially regarding player replacements.
Before the opening match between the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Kolkata, let’s take a look at three notable rule changes:
- Saliva Ban Lifted: Bowlers can now use saliva to shine the ball again, a big change since the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI made this decision after most IPL captains agreed on it during a meeting in Mumbai. The International Cricket Council had made the saliva ban permanent in 2022, but the IPL has its own rules, and this move could influence cricket globally.
- Second New Ball in the Second Innings: Starting from the 11th over of evening matches, a fresh ball can be introduced if the umpires think the dew is affecting play. This rule aims to keep the high-scoring trend going this season, but it won’t apply to afternoon games.
- DRS for Wides: For the first time, the Decision Review System will now cover height wides and off-side wides, making sure there’s a fair call on those deliveries. However, leg-side wides will still be decided by the on-field umpire.
Also, the BCCI has decided to stick with the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to have 12 players instead of the usual 11. This rule faced some backlash last season for possibly limiting all-rounders, but the board is keeping it in place for this year.
