2023 ODI World Cup: ‘To Break That Jinx Against New Zealand In World Cups…’, Robin Uthappa On Beating New Zealand After 20 Years In ICC Event

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa expressed his delight at the Indian cricket team’s hard-fought victory over New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup, which took place in Dharamshala on Sunday, October 22.

Indian bowlers restricted New Zealand to a total of 273/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Despite a promising start, the Indian team encountered frequent wicket losses at critical moments. After that, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a partnership of 78 runs to win the fifth consecutive game for India.

While speaking in a video on Sports Today, Robin Uthappa spoke on the performance of team India in beating New Zealand after 20 years.

The former batter said, “To break that jinx against New Zealand in World Cups was also important for India’s confidence. You don’t want too many easy victories in this tournament. You want to work for them and want to earn them. New Zealand did make India earn this one.”

He further added, “New Zealand didn’t have someone like Jadeja who could hold one end up and stand with Daryl Mitchell in that partnership. You got to give credit to Shami there and India bowled better at the death.”

Robin Uthappa further talked and said that India will definitely crack into the semifinal as they have been playing the best form of cricket.

“I feel India will end up as the top team in the table. It is the semifinal hurdle that concerns me. But there’s no doubt that they are up and above any other team in the World Cup and are the favorites at the moment.”
